Taichung’s First Square is near the train station. It’s now also called “ASEAN Square.”

Taichung’s First Square is near the train station. It’s now also called “ASEAN Square.”

Inside the square there are lots of small shops. But what’s sold here is a bit different from other places — it’s Southeast Asian food, including Thai, Filipino, Vietnamese, and Indonesian.

On weekend daytimes, this place is especially lively. Many Southeast Asian friends come here on their days off, taking the train to shop, eat, and chat with friends.

I came here today at noon and had a bowl of pho. It tasted very authentic, different from restaurants outside. The owner is Vietnamese and speaks a little Chinese. His staff are also Vietnamese, but they don’t speak Chinese.

You can’t find the things sold here anywhere else in Taiwan — things like Southeast Asian snacks and spices.

Walking around inside, it feels like you’ve stepped into another country, but this is actually right in downtown Taichung.

Taichung is very diverse, and this is one example of that.
