Taiwan Mandarin ！

Taipei has the MRT. But most of Taiwan runs on something else — the Taiwan Railways, or 台鐵.

This is a short beginner reading lesson in Taiwanese Mandarin. You’re in Shalu, Taichung. You need to get to Changhua. You buy a ticket, find the platform, and get on the train.

You’ll pick up words like 月台 yuè tái (platform), 幾點到 jǐ diǎn dào (what time does it arrive), and 到站了 dào zhàn le (we’ve arrived) — in a real sentence, not a vocabulary list.

What you’ll learn: how to take the Taiwan Railways in Taiwanese Mandarin. Not the MRT. Not Taipei. The way most of Taiwan actually gets around.

今天我要去彰化。

我騎車到沙鹿火車站，把車停好。我走進去，看了一下時刻表。下一班往彰化的車是十點二十分，還有十五分鐘。

我走到售票窗口。

我說：「一張到彰化，謝謝。」

站務員說：「區間車還是自強號？」

我說：「區間車就好。」

站務員說：「五十五元。」

我付了錢，拿了票。我看了一下票——沙鹿到彰化，十點二十分，三月台。

我走到第一月台，等了一下。月台上沒有很多人。我坐在椅子上，看看手機。

沒多久，廣播說：「往彰化方向的區間車，即將進站，請旅客注意安全。」

火車來了。我上車，找了一個靠窗的位子坐下來。

窗外是田、是海、是小鎮。我想，台灣不只有台北。

大約二十分鐘後，廣播說：「彰化站到站了，請旅客準備下車。」

到站了。我拿起背包，下車。

彰化到了。

翻譯 the translation

Today I’m going to Changhua.

I ride my scooter to Shalu Station and park. I walk in and check the timetable. The next train to Changhua is at 10:20 — fifteen minutes from now.

I walk to the ticket window.

“One ticket to Changhua, please.”

The staff member says: “Local train or express?”

“Local is fine.”

“That’s 55 dollars.”

I pay and take the ticket. I check it — Shalu to Changhua, 10:20, Platform 1.

I walk to Platform 1 and wait. It’s not very crowded. I sit on a bench and check my phone.

Not long after, the announcement comes: “The local train bound for Changhua is arriving shortly. Please stand back for safety.”

The train pulls in. I get on and find a window seat.

Outside: fields, ocean, small towns. I think — Taiwan isn’t just Taipei.

About twenty minutes later, the announcement says: “Arriving at Changhua Station. Passengers, please prepare to disembark.”

We’re here. I grab my bag and get off.

Changhua. Made it.

Notice this

「區間車還是自強號？」
This is the first thing they’ll ask at the ticket window. 區間車 is the local train — slower, cheaper, stops everywhere. 自強號 is express — faster, more expensive. For short trips like Shalu to Changhua, 區間車就好. “Local is fine.”

「往彰化方向」
往 means “heading toward.” You’ll see it on signs, hear it in announcements. 往彰化 = bound for Changhua. 往台北 = heading to Taipei. One character, very useful.

「台灣不只有台北」
Not a grammar point. Just true.
